Medical Cannabis and Work, Exams and Tests

This is a common and important worry: since I have a legal prescription, what about work, periodic exams and THC tests? The issue is real, and it is better to know the rules than to get into trouble through not knowing. We address it plainly.

A prescription is a medicine, but tests detect THC

Using medical cannabis on a prescription is legal. That does not change the fact that substance tests detect THC, and in regular patients it can be present in the body for a long time after use.

So the mere fact of having a prescription does not always resolve the situation at work - much depends on the role and internal rules.

Roles requiring full fitness

Particular caution applies to jobs that require full psychophysical fitness - drivers, machine operators, people in safety-critical roles. Here the presence of THC can have serious consequences, regardless of a prescription.

We cover the related topic of driving in cannabis and driving.

How to approach it sensibly

A few practical rules:

  • be aware of the rules that apply to your role
  • if in doubt, consider a conversation with an occupational health doctor
  • do not hide therapy from a doctor assessing your fitness for work
  • An honest approach protects you and others, especially in responsible duties.

    Discuss it at your visit

If your work involves tests or requires full fitness, tell the doctor - they will help choose the therapy and timing with your situation in mind. The first visit is in person, in Krakow, Bydgoszcz, Torun or Kielce.
