Medical Cannabis and Daytime Drowsiness

Drowsiness after taking medical cannabis is a common but manageable problem. For someone treating insomnia it is even an advantage, but when you need to be sharp during the day, excessive drowsiness can get in the way. The good news: it can largely be controlled.

Where drowsiness comes from

The sedating effect comes mainly from THC, and also from certain strain profiles (traditionally associated with indica). The dose matters too - too high a dose more often causes drowsiness.

That does not mean therapy has to send you to sleep during the day. It is about arranging it sensibly.

How to limit daytime drowsiness

A few proven ways, set with a doctor:

  • taking the larger part of the dose in the evening rather than during the day
  • choosing a more stimulating profile or one with more CBD for daytime
  • using smaller daily doses, that is microdosing
  • avoiding raising the dose on your own
  • Often adjusting the timing and profile is enough to regain clarity during the day.

    Remember about driving

Drowsiness is also a safety issue - while THC is working you must not drive. We write about this in cannabis and driving.

If you work or drive, tell the doctor - they will help arrange therapy around your day.

    Adjust therapy at your visit

If drowsiness bothers you, do not give up right away - usually an adjustment is enough. The first visit is in person, in Krakow, Bydgoszcz, Torun or Kielce, and you discuss follow-up adjustments at 731 000 645.
