What a Medical Cannabis Prescription Looks Like

A prescription for medical cannabis is sometimes shrouded in mystery, though in practice it is an ordinary e-prescription - the same as for other medicines. We explain what it contains, how you receive it, how long it is valid and how to fill it.

It is an ordinary e-prescription

After qualification the doctor issues an e-prescription, which you receive as a four-digit code - by text, email or as an information printout. To fill it at a pharmacy you need this code and your ID number.

There is nothing extraordinary or suspicious about it - it is a legal medical document.

What the prescription contains

The prescription includes, among other things:

  • the name of the prescribed raw material or product and its amount (grammage)
  • the dosing recommended by the doctor
  • the details of the patient and the issuing doctor
  • The doctor matches the profile and amount to your symptoms and therapy plan.

    How long it is valid

The prescription has a set validity period for filling, usually 30 days from the date of issue (or the indicated dispensing date). If a larger amount was prescribed for longer, the pharmacist may dispense the raw material in batches.

It is a full-price prescription - why cannabis is not reimbursed we explain in medical cannabis and NFZ.

    How to fill it

With the prescription code you go to a pharmacy that dispenses medical cannabis - not every one stocks it, so it is sometimes worth calling ahead. We describe the details in how to fill an e-prescription and where to buy.
