THC to CBD Ratios - How They Are Chosen

In medical cannabis it is rarely about THC alone. Often the key to effective and well-tolerated therapy is the THC to CBD ratio. It largely determines how the preparation acts - stronger or gentler, more or less intoxicating.

What THC and CBD provide

In short: THC is responsible for strong pain-relieving and antispasmodic action, but also for the psychoactive effect. CBD is not intoxicating, softens part of THC's action and has its own calming properties. We cover the basics in THC or CBD.

Together they act differently than separately - this is part of the entourage effect.

Different ratios, different goals

In practice you meet various ratios, matched to the therapy goal:

  • CBD-dominant - gentler, less intoxicating, often for anxiety, for daytime, to start therapy
  • balanced (e.g. 1:1) - a compromise of strength and tolerance, common in pain and spasticity
  • THC-dominant - stronger action, for severe pain, usually in the evening
  • There is no single right ratio - there is the one matched to you.

    Why the doctor decides

Choosing the ratio is a medical task, based on symptoms, tolerance and lifestyle. It usually starts cautiously, with more CBD, and is modified as needed.

How dose selection works we describe in the guide dosing.
