One of the most common patient questions is: does the NFZ reimburse medical cannabis? The short answer - no, in practice you pay for the therapy yourself. It is worth understanding why, and what treatment really costs, so you can plan the expense calmly.
Below we explain it without legal jargon.
In Poland medical cannabis has the status of a pharmaceutical raw material from which the pharmacy prepares a compounded medicine. This raw material is not covered by NFZ reimbursement, so the patient pays its full cost.
A prescription for medical cannabis is therefore a full-price prescription - the document itself is legal and valid, but it does not lower the pharmacy price. That is a different situation from many reimbursed drugs.
The total cost comes down to two things:
You will find a full cost breakdown, including examples of monthly spending, in how much therapy costs.
Sometimes there is a question about tax relief. The options can be limited and depend on the individual situation, so we do not over-promise here - it is something to check on your own, for example with an accountant regarding rehabilitation relief.
From the patient's perspective the key thing is realistic planning: knowing the daily dose and the price per gram, it is easy to estimate the monthly cost and avoid surprises.
A well-chosen dose means not only effectiveness but also a sensible cost - which is why therapy runs under a doctor's supervision, and the doctor does not recommend more than needed. The first visit is in person, in Krakow, Bydgoszcz, Torun or Kielce.
