This is a more technical but important safety topic. Cannabinoids, like many drugs, are processed by the liver. This has two practical consequences: it matters in liver disease and it can affect how other medication you take works.
THC and CBD are metabolised mainly in the liver, by the same enzyme systems that break down many other drugs. That is why the state of the liver and your other medication genuinely matter here.
In serious liver disease the dose is selected with particular caution.
Because cannabinoids compete for the same enzymes as other drugs, they can affect their concentration - weakening or strengthening the effect. This concerns, among others, some anticoagulant, antiepileptic and sedative drugs.
We expand on interactions in cannabis and alcohol and drugs.
The most important practical conclusion: tell the doctor about all medication and supplements you take and about any liver disease. This allows therapy to be chosen safely and unfavourable interactions to be avoided.
How to discuss this openly we describe in how to talk to a doctor.
