Medical Cannabis for Chronic Fatigue

Chronic fatigue is more than ordinary tiredness - it is exhaustion that does not pass with rest and makes daily functioning hard. It can be part of chronic fatigue syndrome, and also appears after infections, including after COVID, and in the course of other illnesses.

Patients ask whether medical cannabis can help. The answer needs caution and honesty.

Where the limits are

Let us be honest: there is no strong evidence that medical cannabis treats chronic fatigue itself. What is more, in some people THC can increase sleepiness, so if poorly chosen it can make things worse.

So we do not promise that cannabis will add energy. Its possible role is indirect.

Where it may really help

Chronic fatigue often comes with other complaints for which medical cannabis is sometimes considered:

  • chronic muscle and joint pain
  • sleep disturbances that deepen the fatigue
  • tension, anxiety and low mood
  • Better sleep and less pain may indirectly translate into better daytime functioning. We expand on sleep in insomnia.

    Diagnosis first

Chronic fatigue has many possible causes - from deficiencies, through the thyroid, to depression. It is worth establishing them with a doctor, because cannabis may ease symptoms but will not replace identifying the cause.

The doctor selects the profile and timing so as not to deepen sleepiness - more in the guide dosing.
