Medical Cannabis and Fertility and Libido

This question comes up more often than you might think - how cannabis therapy affects intimacy and fertility. The topic is nuanced, because THC's effect varies between people, and much depends on the dose and how regularly it is used.

Effect on libido

Reports are mixed. In some people small doses are associated with relaxation and increased desire, especially when there is less stress and anxiety in play. On the other hand, chronic high doses of THC are linked to lowered libido.

In other words: the direction of the effect is not the same for everyone and depends on the dose and individual response.

Effect on fertility

Here caution is greater. Chronic THC use is linked to a possible effect on sperm quality in men and on the cycle and ovulation in women. The evidence is not conclusive, but when trying for a child this is worth taking seriously.

If you are planning a pregnancy, discuss it with a doctor. We cover the separate, important topic of pregnancy and breastfeeding in cannabis and pregnancy.

What it means in practice

As in all therapy, what matters is a sensible, lowest effective dose and running it under a doctor's eye. If fertility is important to you now or in your plans, say so plainly at the visit.

We cover the dose in the guide dosing medical cannabis.
