This is a topic where myths and misuse come easily, so we'll handle it with extra care. The short, honest answer: the evidence for cannabis in ADHD itself is weak, and use is at best off-label, as a supplement, never as a first line.
Below we lay it out plainly: where cannabis can genuinely help people with ADHD, where it can't, and when the risk outweighs the potential benefit.
Standard ADHD treatment rests on medication (most often stimulants) and behavioral therapy - and those have documented efficacy. Cannabis replaces neither.
Studies on cannabis strictly for ADHD symptoms (attention, impulsivity) are few and inconclusive. There's no basis to treat it as an ADHD medication.
ADHD rarely comes alone. It's very often accompanied by anxiety, chronic stress, insomnia and tension - and it's these coexisting symptoms that can be a real target for cannabis therapy.
In other words: cannabis may calm anxiety and improve sleep in an adult with ADHD, which indirectly eases functioning. But that's treating the coexisting problems, not ADHD itself - and that distinction matters.
In young people, whose brains are still developing, THC can do harm - worsen concentration and motivation, and in predisposed individuals raise the risk of mental disorders.
So in children and teenagers we don't consider cannabis therapy for ADHD. In adults the decision is individual, cautious and always preceded by a thorough interview - including a question about psychosis in the family. This is a topic for a serious conversation with a doctor, not a self-experiment.
If you have ADHD and are considering cannabis, the best move is an honest talk with a doctor about what you actually want to improve - sleep, anxiety, tension - and whether cannabis therapy makes sense in your case as a supplement, not a replacement.
