How to Talk to a Doctor About Medical Cannabis

Many patients put off the conversation about medical cannabis for fear of judgment or awkwardness. There is no need. It is an ordinary medical conversation, and a doctor in a cannabis clinic discusses it every day. The more honest the conversation, the safer and more effective the therapy.

What not to hide

For safety, tell the doctor openly about:

  • all conditions, including mental health and heart conditions
  • all medication and supplements you take
  • substances, including alcohol, and previous experiences with cannabis
  • pregnancy or planning one
  • This is not an interrogation - this information allows therapy to be chosen safely and interactions to be avoided.

    What questions are worth asking

It is good to come with your own questions. Common ones are:

  • are there indications for therapy in my situation
  • what form and dose do you suggest to start
  • how will therapy affect driving and work
  • when to expect effects and when is the follow-up
  • There are no stupid questions - better to ask than to guess.

    How to prepare

Bring your medical records and a list of medication. What exactly to bring we describe in what to bring to a first visit.

If you do not know something or are hesitant, just say so - the doctor is there to guide you through the process.
