How to Store Medical Cannabis - A Practical Guide

Medical cannabis is a medicine, and like any medicine it needs proper storage. Well-kept dried flower retains its potency and aroma for a long time, while poorly stored flower loses its effect and changes character. Here are a few simple rules.

Four enemies: light, heat, moisture, air

Four factors spoil dried flower fastest:

  • light - breaks down cannabinoids, so keep the medicine in the dark
  • heat - speeds up degradation and dries it out, avoid windowsills and spots near a radiator
  • moisture - encourages mould, dangerous especially with vaporisation
  • air - oxidises THC, so an airtight seal matters
  • The best conditions are a cool, dark, dry and airtight place.

What to store it in and where

The original airtight pharmacy packaging or a glass jar with a good seal works best. Choose a cupboard away from heat and light sources.

Contrary to appearances, the fridge is not ideal - temperature swings and moisture can do harm. A stable room temperature in a dark place is enough.

Why it matters for the effect

Over time and under poor conditions THC converts into CBN, which changes the effect profile - old flower can be more sedating and weaker. We cover this in CBG and CBN.

Good storage is simply the assurance that the dose works as the doctor intended.

    Safety first

Always keep the medicine out of reach of children and pets, ideally in a lockable place, in its original labelled packaging. It is a matter of household safety.
