How Medical Cannabis Works and What the First Dose Feels Like

Before the first dose many patients have the same question in mind: will I be high and will I function normally? It is an understandable worry, so let us take it apart calmly - how medical cannabis actually works and what to really expect.

In short: therapy is not about intoxication but about relief, and the first dose is small enough that the effects are usually mild.

How medical cannabis works

Our body has an endocannabinoid system that helps regulate pain, sleep, appetite and tension. The compounds in cannabis - mainly THC and CBD - act on this system. THC accounts for the pain-relieving and relaxing effect, while CBD calms and balances THC.

That is why the effect depends not only on the dose but also on the ratio of THC to CBD in the product.

Does medical cannabis intoxicate

With correct dosing the goal is not a high but easing symptoms while keeping a clear mind. Therapy starts from a low dose precisely to find the amount that works without intoxicating.

Strong intoxication usually appears with too high a dose - which is why the dose is set and adjusted by a doctor, not by chance.

What you may feel after the first dose

Reactions are individual, but after a small starting dose the most common feeling is gentle relaxation, sometimes slight drowsiness or a dry mouth. Relief from symptoms usually builds gradually, over days and weeks of dose adjustment, not after the first time.

If you feel uneasy, it most often means the dose or the THC share was too high for you - a signal to adjust, not a reason to panic.

How fast and how long it works

  • Oil - drops act more slowly (usually 30 to 90 minutes) but last longer; good for a steady effect
  • Vaporised flower - acts fast, within a few minutes, but for a shorter time; helps with sudden symptoms
  • We discuss choosing the form in our article cannabis oil or dried flower.

    When to tell your doctor

Contact your doctor if the sensations are strong, persist or worry you. We describe the most common, mild side effects and how to avoid them separately - see our article on side effects and on dosing.
