The History and Research of Medical Cannabis

Medical cannabis seems like a new topic, but cannabis has accompanied medicine for thousands of years. A short journey through history helps explain why it is returning today as a legal therapeutic option - and what the research has really confirmed.

From antiquity to prohibition

Cannabis was used medicinally in ancient China, India and the Middle East - for pain, cramps and insomnia. In the 19th century it entered European medicine. The 20th century changed everything, when many countries introduced a legal ban, halting research too for decades.

The breakthrough: discovering the endocannabinoid system

The real turning point came in the 1990s, when scientists discovered the endocannabinoid system - the body's internal system that cannabis acts on. This explained why the plant affects so many processes. We write about it in the endocannabinoid system.

What research has confirmed

Modern research most strongly supports the use of medical cannabis in a few areas:

  • chronic pain, especially neuropathic
  • spasticity in multiple sclerosis
  • nausea and vomiting after chemotherapy
  • some drug-resistant epilepsies (mainly CBD)
  • In many other indications the evidence is promising but still developing - which is why therapy is run individually and cautiously.
