Cannabis Oil vs Dried Flower - Which to Choose

The two most common forms of medical cannabis are dried flower and oil. They do the same thing - deliver THC and CBD - but completely differently: different speed, different duration, different discretion. The choice isn't about taste, but about what it's for.

Below we break down both forms, add extract and capsules, and explain how the doctor picks one or the other - often both at once.

Dried flower - fast and flexible

Dried cannabis is used through vaporization - heating without combustion (smoking is out - that's not a medical form). It works fastest of all forms: relief comes within minutes.

That makes flower a good choice for sudden flare-ups - a migraine attack, a sharp spike in pain, when you need an effect right away. The downsides are shorter duration and needing a vaporizer.

Oil - slower, longer, discreet

Oil is taken as drops under the tongue. It works slower - 30 to 90 minutes - but lasts longer and more predictably. You measure the dose drop by drop, so it's easier to hold a steady level.

Oil fits where long, even action matters: night pain, insomnia, maintenance therapy. It's discreet and needs no equipment - which is why older patients and those who don't want to inhale often choose it.

Many patients combine both: oil as a daily base and flower for sudden flare-ups. It's a common, sensible setup.

Extract, tincture, capsules

Beyond flower and oil you'll meet other forms. Cannabis extract is a thick, highly concentrated preparation - for patients needing high doses. Capsules and tinctures offer convenience and repeatable dosing, but are less available and usually pricier.

Prices start around 20 PLN per gram of flower and from 300 PLN per oil bottle. The full cost breakdown is in our article on medical cannabis costs.

How the form is chosen

You don't have to choose alone. The doctor picks the form based on your symptoms, lifestyle and how fast it should act. The THC and CBD profile matters more here than the form itself - we cover this in our article on indica vs sativa.
